SKIN DEEP - you and your skincare

I was going to write about hair this week, but then I got thinking about the bigger picture. Yes, hair is vital to our egos - you know, those rich and luscious locks, the kind that people notice, you want that kind of hair! But getting that hair is complex and needs time to research! So....that's on the way, so stay tuned!

Yesterday as I was getting my bi-monthly pedicure I started thinking about my skin. Especially with the cold weather settling in, my pads have been getting dry, real fast! So let's talk moisturizers....something I LOVE to talk about!!!!

Our skin being our largest organ, it 's important to pay attention to what we put on it.

You may not realize the evils lurking in your favourite lotions and potions. My skin care routine has changed over the past five years. A long time worshipper of Vaseline Intensive Care Cocoa Butter, I realized I was doing more harm to my baby soft skin.

As important as it is to watch what our skin absorbs the more important thing to be cautious about is what our potions may be KEEPING IN and what's happening when we wash it off.

Some frequently used ingredients in today's skincare "seal" in the moisture, which is what is giving you baby soft skin.

imagine for a second, wrapping yourself in plastic wrap and then going about your day...where does the sweat go? Sweating is one of the most important ways our body gets rid of toxins. If we are sealing our skin with product, then we are not releasing the toxins and they are being reabsorbed by the skin.

Many of them are endocrine disruptors. Our endocrine system regulates EVERYTHING! It's a messenger system that creates feedback loops and transmits our hormones throughout our body. Imagine: metabolism, stress, sex drive, hunger, all goes out of whack.

If you're imagining what I just described, it's gross...and it's time for a change.

If you read the ingredient list of just 1 of your lotion bottles, some of the ingredients are frightening:

  • Propylparaben

  • phenoxyethanol

  • Methylparaben

  • Behentrimonium Chloride

  • Distearyldimonion Chloride

...and there are many, many more!

From allergies to endocrine disruptors, these lotions are doing you NO favours!

What can you do?

1. Stay away from the bad guys

If you go to the Environmental Working Group's website, you can enter in the ingredients listed on your skincare and look to see what's lurking in them. They also have a listing of great "approved" skincare that you may want to switch to.

2. Download this app on your phone:

It enables you to scan the barcode of many products and will list the ingredients and rate the harm to you. I found there were a lot of items that were not in their database, but it's still really neat to use.

3. Find better products!

Unfortunately, products that are better for you have a heftier price tag. BUT, you usually don't need as much of it and it has better results!

Here's a pro-tip: go into the Beauty department Winners or Marshalls, you will almost always find some great lines at amazing prices!

Here is a list of some great products to look out for:

EveryONE Company

The Honest Company

Nature's Gate

Green Beaver

Green Cricket

Ask at the cosmetics counter as well, they are a great source of information.

Have you ever thought about what you're putting on your skin? Have you ever had weird reactions to some of them?

Let me know if you have any questions and what you think of your skincare!

Until the next time,

Eat well. Work Hard. Seize Wellness.
